Rally Against the Fee Hikes
Posted on 03. Jan, 2010 by Abe in Blog, News

Tomorrow, students will hold the first rally of 2010 at the UCI flagpoles in protest against the past year’s fee hikes and layoffs. This event is unlikely to reverse the decisions of administrators, but the organizers–and hundreds of committed students–believe that persistent action and show of solidarity will strengthen the political voice of those who make up the essential parts of the university. It’s an hour out of the day that can demonstrate, however shortly, that we haven’t forgotten our peers who’ve been priced out of education, our workers who’ve kept our universities clean and our teachers who are hard-pressed to do more with less. Also, we haven’t forgotten about how police brutalized students at UCLA–the abject use of force against peaceful demonstrators.

If this is already expected to be unlikely to impact any change, perhaps UC needs a protest with more vigor than a single afternoon of milling about before returning to class.
