Stains

Lipstick on the collar’s a classic. Obvious rouge diamond of an affair. Generations ago we would have been reading lengthy scrolls to prove scholarship. Now we read stains across the apparel of those who look both ways and keep discreet. They have the fascinating stories that make the day sail by more quickly. We remain quiet to let them know they’re secret’s safe with the immigrants who can’t speak English, but once the bell on the door frame makes the ring of exit we converse in it. Then we speak in our second language. Stains.

I was sitting in the passenger seat of my teal Buick behind a shopping center in Silver Lake, just a few miles north of downtown Los Angeles. Parked by the loading docks under a street lamp near a blue dumpster, I smelled rotten meat and stale beer creeping into my car through the back seat window. The window had been broken for about a year, stuck and always rolled down a few inches.
